Biography

La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros is the band of Charly García after Sui Generis’s break up. It was a new project, which left the so famous folk of the former duet to play symphonic rock. During their short existence they made only two records: "La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros" (1976) & "Películas" (1977).

«I did what I liked in this group», recalls Charly. Influenced by the elaborated rock of Steely Dan and Genesis symphonic rock, Charly García shaped one of the best Argentine bands of that genre. «we were the underdeveloped Yes», summarizes García. But, at that time, neither of the two LPs of La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros reached the expected feedback, but had to wait some time to be highly acclaimed. La Máquina was the most complex and deepest attempt of Symphonic Rock in Argentina, and, García introduced the idea of simultaneous keyboard players. Maybe this new style was their biggest barrier between the group and the public, used to listening to Sui Generis.

La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros broke up due to internal problems in 1977. Charly recalls: «I left La Máquina after a show. It finished and I went to a hotel, where Zoca was – his wife then – and we spoke about going to Brazil. I had started listening to Milton Nascimento and his music surprised me tremendously» (Chirom, page 30).

The Love Festival was the last performance of La Máquina, in a packed Luna Park, on November 11 1977, where they played with Mestre, Gieco, Porcheto, Gustavo Santaolalla, the brothers Markoff among others. Among all the musicians who took part of this band at this concert was David Lebón, the acoustic base of Sui Generis (Rinaldo Rafanelli - Juan Rodríguez), Aníbal Kerpel and Pino Marrone, from the group Crucis, one of the outstanding events of the concert was the beautiful version of the song "Volver a los diecisiete", of Violeta Parra which did not have a great feedback due to the public’s rejection to folklore music. Charly García after a failed attempt in forming la Banda del Amor with Lebón and other musicians, convinced the latter to travel to Brazil to shape the project Seru Giran.
